Cars As Art-Form
Whoever you are, wherever you’re from, we’ve all got it on thing in common – personality. But how do you make people see who you are, not what you are? Well one way is by showcasing your artistic expression. Whether it’s that novelty t-shirt your mum hates, the misguided Simpson’s tattoo from your best mate’s stag do, or immediately belting out “YMCA” by the Village people anytime anyone merely mentions the word Karaoke; you have got to earn your street cred somehow. Regardless of what image you’re working with, the best way is to show your inner spirit and be dynamic in everything you do.
In the era when art was facing the dilemma of there being no original thought, in screeched the founding father of pop artists, Andy Warhol. The American’s innovative work was gutsy and profound; throwing back at the world what was once considered the norm and turning it in to something exhilarating, astounding and entirely unique. Follow his lead and make the most of what you’ve got and do everything you can with it.
Jackson Pollock also did just that, he was an individual; he hurtled paint around his canvas at break neck speeds disregarding the uproar that was met by his spectators and critics. He didn’t make his art to blend in with the crowd, he didn’t do it to look the same as everyone else; he did it to “Express yourself” as Charles Wright so eloquently sung. Show yourself, as yourself.
The same approach was taken at a recent unique exhibition featuring cars painted by Warhol, Lichtenstein and Hockney which went on show for the first time in London as part of the 2012 Festival*. It featured an array of epic paintjobs used to enhance the vehicles bodies; artists used these cars as their canvasses to transform them into something much more innovative, their own personality on wheels.
Unfortunately, this isn’t always as easy to achieve. The wow factor that is gained from the powerful impact of seeing something distinctive and wildly inventive is hard to be found when so many things in this world are generic. So how do we express ourselves when custom designing your own canvas is not an option?
